Eligibility Requirements
To register to vote in Seminole County, you must meet all of the following requirements:
- Be a citizen of the United States. Only U.S. citizens may register to vote or vote in Florida.
- Be a legal resident of the state of Florida.
- Be a legal resident of Seminole County.
- Be at least 16 years old to pre-register, or at least 18 years old to register and vote.
- Not have been adjudicated mentally incapacitated with respect to voting, unless your right to vote has been restored.
- Not have been convicted of a felony, unless your right to vote has been restored.
Pre-Registration
If you are at least 16 years old and meet all other eligibility requirements, you may pre-register to vote. Pre-registration allows you to complete the registration process early so you are ready to vote when you turn 18.
Your pre-registration will automatically become an active voter registration on your 18th birthday. At that time, the Supervisor of Elections will mail you a voter information card, and you will be eligible to vote.
If your 18th birthday falls between the registration deadline and Election Day, and you pre-registered before the deadline, you will be eligible to vote in that election.
Closed Primary State
Florida is a closed primary state. You are not required to choose a political party when you register to vote. However, party affiliation affects which candidates you may vote for in certain elections.
In partisan primary elections, voters may only vote for candidates from the political party with which they are registered. To vote in a party’s primary, you must have been registered with that party at least 29 days before the election.
In general elections, all voters may vote for any candidate listed on their ballot, regardless of party affiliation, including voters with no party affiliation.
Party Affiliation
You can update your political party at any time. However, starting 29 days before an election, party change updates are paused while our team prepares for Election Day. If you make a change during that time, it will take effect once the election is over.
To update your party, complete a Florida Voter Registration Application. Mail your application form to the Seminole County Supervisor of Elections office.
